In a recent talk by Carl Benedikt Frey, Author of ‘The Technology Trap: Capital Labor and Power in the Age of Automation‘ (Princeton University Press, 2019), he talked about how there has been plenty of research done in the past stating that when conferences get cancelled/innovation and collaboration suffers. He believes, it is not the end of the office, such concerns are exaggerated.
Frey stated that even though we are collaborating quite effectively at the moment, those collaborators still have to meet in the first instance to set up that collaboration, and there is a reason that people in the knowledge industry – most importantly – have clustered in relatively skilled cities over the centuries, is simply because they benefit from knowledge spill-over, they benefit from the type of sporadic interaction and water cooler moments that drive innovation.
